Scandicci play 2008

INTRODUZIONE

ACT I

SCENE I

In the school corridor: Jennifer is late for school, is looking at her watch. Tom comes down the corridor, looking for his classroom.

Jennifer: Oh mamma mia! I´m running late!

Jennifer and Tom bump into each other

Tom: Scusa! Sorry!

Jennifer: What are you doing?

Tom: I’m...I’m so... so sorry!

Jennifer collects her books etc. from the floor, Jennifer doesn´t hear Tom´s apologies.

Jennifer:- Now, look what you´ve done!

Tom (very quietly): I´m so sorry. (Jennifer doesn´t hear)

Jennifer (looks at her hands and says to herself): Oh, my nails!

Jennifer goes away and the boy follows her with his eye

SCENE II

2. Carousel con Chiara al piano (durata 0.59)

Friends of Jennifer are in the drama classroom. - Jennifer is late

Friends are chatting and laughing, Jennifer enters

Friend 1: Hi! Where‘ve you been?

Jennifer: Hi! Guess what happened to me just now. I was running ´cause I was late and some stupid boy just bumped into me. I’ve never seen that boy here before. I think that he´s new at our school. He was soooo rude. He didn´t even say sorry. How stupid!

(Friends: oh... really... etc., then chatting and diva-like-acting continues)

(Drama teacher comes in)

Teacher: Buon giorno ragazzi! (risposte in Inglese) Everybody sit down, please!

Today we´re going to speak about ... (students are chatting on) Are you listening?

We´re talking about William Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet. What do you know about the play?

A Jennifer e alle sue amiche. L’insegnante è appassionata, i ragazzi sbadigliano, commentano, scimmiottano… Qualcuno russa

Jennifer: There is that young couple in Verona.

Teacher: Good. What else?

Friend 1: They killed themselves because of love.:

Jennifer: How stupid. I’d never do that.

Friend 3 (bossy girl): That’s typical of you.

Friend 2 (blond and not-that-clever): Yes, because you aren’t romantic at all. But boys aren’t worth dying for them anyway. (Girls giggle)

Noise of someone knocking at the door

Suono di qualcuno che bussa

Somebody knocks at the door, Tom comes in, Jennifer recognizes him as the boy from the corridor.

Jennifer: (aside to her friends) Oh, that´s the boy I was talking about.

Friend 1: Oh, he´s the stupid one.

Friend 2: But he´s goodlooking.

Friend1 and Jennifer (in a chorus): Noooo!

Jennifer: Are you joking?

Friend 3: No, he´s not that cute..

Teacher: Right, now. Will you please listen to me. This is Tom, he´s a new student in our class. I hope that you´ll get on well!

Friend 2 (loud): I guess that´s our Romeo.

(Girls are laughing)

Teacher (earnestly): That´s a good idea, indeed! (to Tom:) Right, we‘re talking about Romeo and Juliet. Will you please take a seat there next to Jennifer?

Tom tries to sit next to Jennifer, who puts her books on the floor between her and another girl

Teacher (to Jennifer): Will you please take your books away and let Tom sit down!

Jennifer (obeys but seems disappointed, says to friends): Moooove!

Teacher: So, who will be Juliet then? ... (looks around, focusses on Jennifer) Jennifer, you will be our Juliet!

Friends: Oh, poor you, ha ha.  Friends laugh...

Jennifer: Oh, please, Proffe!!, do I really have to..?

School bell rings – Inserire suono di campanella

SCENE III

music: Romeo and Juliet – Dire Straits 0.21 - photo of the balcony

In the drama class, Tom is doing his homework, Jennifer comes in, looks around, sees Tom, walks slowly up to him

Jennifer (unfriendly and reluctant): Hello! Teacher told us to rehearse our parts in the play. Maybe we should do it now? So, do you have time now? (looking around, not wanting her friends to see them)

Tom: Yes, of course. (surprised, shy)

Jennifer: Then, let´s start from these lines and make it quick so we´ll get over with it.

Tom (starts to read as Romeo): (= balcony scene, speaking sooo nicely, looking into Jennifer´s eyes): O, speak again, bright angel! For thou art - As glorious to this night being o’er my head - As is a winged messenger of heaven - Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes - Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him - When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds - And sails upon the bosom of the air.

Jennifer (reading Juliet´s lines, feeling like Juliet while reading!!!): O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? - Deny thy father and refuse thy name; - Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, - And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

Tom (friendly): Let me help you.

She drops her textbook, both are leaning down, faces close to each other,

Jennifer (surprised, starts to see Tom differently): Oh, thanks. That’s nice of you. (smiles, continues reading Juliet): How camest thou hither, tell me, and wherefore? - The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, - And the place death, considering who thou art, - If any of my kinsmen find thee here.

Tom reaches out and takes Jennifer’s hand in his, they continue hand in hand. The text is very romantic, so is the atmosphere

Tom (as Romeo): With love’s light wings did I o’er-perch these walls; - for stony limits cannot hold love out, - And what love can do that dares love attempt; - Therefore thy kinsmen are not let to me.

Friends enter the drama class, unnoticed by Tom and Jennifer, who continue reading

Friend 2: Let´s have a cup of coffee.

Friend 3: Good idea!

Friend 2: Where’s Jennifer? I haven´t seen her for a while.

Friends seeing Tom and Jennifer holding hands, break the magical moment

Friend 1: Oh, there’s Jennifer. And Tom!!

Friends (in a chorus): What - are - you - doing?

Jennifer and Tom let go of their hands and move away from each other

Jennifer: We...we...

Tom: Oh, I ‘ve got to go now. (rises and ...)

Eleonora: Now come on, Jennifer, you know that you can tell us anything

Elisa: We are your friends…

Jennifer: At what time will you be finishing?

Tom: Come on, come with me

Registrazione monologhi - music - 1.19 minutes

Spotlight first on Tom and then on Jennifer and dark - all around

Tom and Jennifer enter holding hands, stop in the front and turn around. First Tom then Jennifer turns round.

Tom: A person can say billions of things...you can say. “Hello, how are you? or“Lovely day, today”, but what .....I’d love to say is ……”Jennifer, you look so pretty this evening “. It’s not difficult, go on!...., All you need is courage. Courage here and now!, this very moment, before she goes!!. In five minutes time she’ll go and you’ll lose her forever....., she’ll get married...., move into another city, she’ll become old. ....she’ll have wrinkles on her face! Go on Tom!!!! stop these five minutes. In so many years of nothingness, five minutes which it is really worth living for.

Jennifer: Come on you stupid boy, come on! Don’t ask me for more! For God’s Sake Please, I don’t know where to look, where to put my hands. Come closer and tell me I look pretty. I won’t be pretty any more in five minutes’ time. I’ll go back home and I’ll get into my pyjama. I’ll be an unshaped mass wrapped up in a blanket. And tomorrow I’ll be surrounded by those witches of my friends. Oh God! Please take him into Your mighty hands and let him come here to me in the next five minutes, , give him the courage to say the first word before I leave. - Otherwise burn him to the ground.!!

Jennifer (nervosa): Muoviti, cretino, muoviti! Prendilo nella tua grande mano e fallo arrivare qui da me nei prossimi cinque minuti, dagli un po’ di coraggio, dagli l’alito della parola prima che io me ne vada. - Oppure inceneriscilo per sempre.

Dark - They go out

ACT II

SCENE III

Eleonora: How lovely your T-shirt is!

Denise: Oh, you know, I just can’t stand that boring thing of our English teacher. Her and those irregular verbs!

Eleonora: Well, what about the new gym teacher? Have you seen her?

Elisa: Have you seen how ridiculous she is!

Denise: Yeh, with that hair! It seems as if a blind person has put that make up on her!

Elisa: She is surely either depressed or a spinster.

Eleonora: No wonder she hasn’t ever got married!

Denise: I think we ought to go to the classroom. The bell has already rung.

Eleonora: Oh dear! I haven’t done my homework...quick, let me copy the problem!

Samantha: Alright, but if you let me try your new nail varnish on.

Eleonora: Ok…

Le amiche escono. Rimangono solo Una di loro e Jennifer.

Elisa: Ah, at long last…now we are on our own without those busybodies. I really can’t stand them. I can only say these things with you. You’re the only person that understands me.

Jennifer: Did you see how Mrs.Rossi. puts her lipstick on? It seems as if she has just come out from the circus!

Elisa: Let’s go back to what we where saying before. Well, What happened then with Tom, your Romeo? Have you seen him lately?

Jennifer (J. Takes out her lipstick and mirror and starts putting it on.): Who? Tom? That hopeless thing? Are you kidding?!!

Elisa: Well, you won’t get angry with me if I tell you something, will you?

Jennifer: No, don’t worry! Go on!

Elisa: I think he’s so sweet, so shy...he’s always so embarrassed. I like him...do you mind if I come on to him?

In the meanwhile Tom goes by. Jennifer continues putting on her make up.

Jennifer: Oh, I don’t mind, you can do as you like. I couldn’t care less.

Elisa: Oh, look! There he is! (Jennifer turns round too). Well, what shall I do? Shall I go?

Jennifer: Of course...go...I think he’s really your type...Go on.

Elisa: Tom!

Zattera - Registrare voci - music - 1.17 minutes

Sometimes we are afraid to let others see what we really are…….

We must have the courage to be ourselves ……..

A volte ci nascondiamo dietro una maschera.

Sometimes we hide behind a mask…..

Bisogna avere il coraggio di gettarla via.

We must be courageous enough to throw our masks away…..

Essere o sembrare: questo è il problema.

Should we be or should we seem? That’s the problem.

E se fosse tutto un sogno?

And…what if it’s all a dream?

Se si potesse cambiare il nostro passato…

If only we could change the past

!..... I’d do anything to change the past……

Everybody has the right to have another chance…

E se si potesse tornare indietro?

If only we start everything all over again

E’ tua la scelta.

It’s up to you!
