Osmaniye play 2008

FIRST ACT

First scene

(In the school corridor: Sonay is late for school,is looking at her watch. Burak comes down the corridor, looking for his classroom.)

Sonay: Oh, I´m running late.

(Sonay and Burak bump into each other)

Burak: Sorry.

Sonay: What are you doing?

Burak: ---

(Sonay collects her books etc. from the floor, Sonay doesn´t hear Burak´s apologies)

Sonay: Now look what you´ve done!

Burak: (very quietly) I´m so sorry. (Sonay doesn´t hear)

Sonay: (looks at her hands and says to herself) Oh, my nails!

(Sonay goes away and the boy follows her with his eyes)

 Second scene

(Friends of Sonay are in the drama classroom, Sonay is late)

(Friends are chatting and laughing, Sonay enters)

Hatice: Hi! Where‘ve you been?

Sonay: Hi! Guess what happened to me just now. I was running ´cause I was late and some stupid boy just bumped into me. I’ve never seen that boy here before. I think that he´s new at our school. He was soooo rude. He didn´t even say sorry. How stupid!

(Friends: oh... really... etc., then chatting and diva-like-acting continues)

(Drama teacher comes in)

Teacher: Good morning class! Everybody sit down, please! Today we´re going to speak about ... (students are chatting on) Are you listening? We´re talking about William Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet. What do you know about the play?

Sonay: There is that young couple in Verona.

Teacher: Good. What else?

Hatice: They killed themselves because of love.:

Sonay: How stupid. I’d never do that.

Hatice: (bossy girl) That’s typical of you.

Sultan: (not-that-clever) Yes, because you aren’t romantic at all. But boys aren’t worth dying for them anyway. (Girls giggle)

(Somebody knocks at the door, Burak comes in, Sonay recognizes him as the boy from the corridor)

Sonay: (aside to her friends) Oh, that´s the boy I was talking about.

Hatice: Oh, he´s the stupid one.

Sultan: But he´s goodlooking.

Sonay and Hatice (in a chorus): Noooo!

Sonay: Are you joking?

Hatice: No, he´s not that cute..

Teacher: Right, now. Will you please listen to me. This is Burak, he´s a new student in our class. I hope that you´ll get on well!

Sultan: (loud) I guess that´s our Romeo.

(Girls are laughing)

Teacher: (earnestly) That´s a good idea, indeed! (to Burak:) Right, we‘re talking about Romeo and Juliet. Will you please take a seat there next to Sonay?

(Burak tries to sit next to Sonay, who puts her books on his chair )

Teacher (to Sonay): Will you please take your books away and let Burak sit down!

Sonay: (obeys but seems disappointed, says to friends): Moooove!

(Friends laugh...)

Teacher: So, who will be Juliet then? ... (looks around, focusses on Sonay) Sonay, you will be our Juliet!

Friends: Oh, poor you, ha ha.

Sonay: Oh, please, Ma’am, do I really have to..?

(School bell rings)

 Third scene

(In the school cafe, Burak is doing his homework, Sonay comes in, looks around, sees Burak, walks slowly up to him)

Sonay: (unfriendly and reluctant) Hello! Teacher told us to rehearse our parts in the play. Maybe we should do it now? So, do you have time now? ( looking around, not wanting her friends to see them)

Burak: Yes, of course. (surprised, shy)

Sonay: Then, let´s start from these lines and make it quick so we´ll get over with it.

Burak: (starts to read as Romeo) (= balcony scene, speaking sooo nicely, looking into Sonay´s eyes) O, speak again, bright angel! For thou art - As glorious to this night being o’er my head - As is a winged messenger of heaven - Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes - Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him - When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds - And sails upon the bosom of the air.

Sonay: (reading Juliet´s lines, feeling like Juliet while reading!!!) O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? - Deny thy father and refuse thy name; - Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, - And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

(She drops her textbook, both are leaning down, faces close to each other, eyecontact)

Burak: (friendly) Let me help you.

Sonay: (surprised, starts to see Burak differently) Oh, thanks. That’s nice of you. (smiles, continues reading Juliet): How camest thou hither, tell me, and wherefore? - The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, - And the place death, considering who thou art, - If any of my kinsmen find thee here.

(Burak reaches out and takes Sonay’s hand in his, they continue hand in hand. The text is very romantic, so is the atmosphere)

Burak (as Romeo): With love’s light wings did I o’er-perch these walls; - for stony limits cannot hold love out, - And what love can do that dares love attempt; - Therefore thy kinsmen are not let to me.

(Friends enter the café, unnoticed by Burak and Sonay, who continue reading)

Sultan: Let´s have a cup of coffee.

Hatice: Good idea!

Sultan: Where’s Sonay? I haven´t seen her for a while.

(Friends seeing Burak and Sonay holding hands, break the magical moment)

Hatice: Oh, there’s Sonay. And Burak!!

Friends: (in a chorus) What - are - you - doing?

(Sonay and Burak lat go of their hands and move away from each other)

Sonay: We...we...

Burak: Oh, I got to go now. (rises and ...)

SECOND ACT

(First Burak enters the class and then Sonay angrily leaves her friends and she also enters the class)

Sonay: Well… Burak I am so sorry for this situation.

Burak: No, no it is not problem. Nevermind. (Sonay comes near Burak with hesitating)

Sonay: Ohh! I’m really sorry. (Girls come into the class and see them talking)

Hatice: Ohh! They are together again.

Sultan: Aaaaa… I can’t believe.

Hatice: Mmmm! What are they talking about? (Sonay sees the girls while she holds her handsup and then the teacher enters the classroom )

Teacher: Yes, Dear my students. Sit down! Please. Sonay and Burak, Have you studied the play? (Sonay and Burak answer with longing) Of course we have.

Sonay: We are ready.

Teacher: Very good. Do it now here. Let me watch the play and see your faults. And then, we will correct them all together.

Hatice: Oh, My God! Again?

Sultan: Nevermind. That’s just a rehearsal. Don’t worry. And also I think she doesn’t like him.

Teacher: Hatice, Sultan. Let’s watch your friends. OK? Start. (Sonay and Burak start rehearsing. Sonay is on the balcony now. )

Burak: (He acts as Romeo now) O, speaks again, bright angel! For thou art- As glorius to this night beingo’er my head – As is a winged Messenger of heaven – Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes – of mortals that fall to gaze on him. – when he betrides the lazy-pacing clouds – And sails upon the bosom of the air.

Sonay: (She tries to feel like Juliet): O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet. How cam'st thou hither, tell me, and wherefore? -The orchard walls are high and hard to climb; And the place death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here.

(Burak holds her hand and the scene is very romantic)

Burak: (As Romeo) With love's light wings did I o'erperch these walls; For stony limits cannot hold love out: And what love can do, that dares love attempt; Therefore thy kinsmen are no let to me.

(Hatice can’t stand them holding their hands)

Hatice: That’s enough!!! (Hatice leaves there and Sultan catches her arm.)

Sultan: Hatice, Hatice… Where are you going?

Hatice: Haven’t you understood yet? (wiping her eyes) I like him very much!

Sultan: What, How? (Hatice goes and everybody is aware of the stuation.)

Teacher: Anyway, That is enough for today. We’ll go on Burakorrow. Good evening to everybody.

Sonay: Good evening! (anxiously)

Burak: Good evening

(The lights go out)

Sonay: (Sonay and Hatice meet in the coridor) Good morning.

Hatice: Good morning to you.

Sonay: Can we speak? I want to talk about something with you.

Hatice: Ok! Of course, but about what?

Sonay: What is your opinion? Think a bit and you will understand what I mean.

Hatice: OK, start.

Sonay: Why did you behave like that yesterday? What’s the matter with you?

Hatice: You are aware of my interest for Burak, aren’t you?

Sonay: Unfortunately, yes.

Hatice: Unfortunately? You mean, you have also care for him don’t you?

Sonay: Oooo Hatice enough, I’m going now.

(The lights go out)

Sonay: It is time to tell him, no more. (Sonay goes into the class and see Burak writing something)

Sonay: Burak, Can I say something to you? (she sees the letter and asks)

Sonay: Are you busy? (Burak hides the letter in his hand )

Burak: No, no no It is not important. What would you say?

Sonay: I want to say that ... (Teacher comes and students stand up. Burak drops the letter. Sonay sees it and looks carefully. At that time Hatice and Sultan come into the class.)

Teacher: Where have you been? Why are you late for the class?

Sultan: We are sorry. We are so sorry teacher.

Teacher: OK, have your seats. (While teacher and girls are speaking, Sonay takes the letter without anybody seeing it)

Teacher: Friends, I’ll check your exam papers, you are free but be silent ,OK?

Sonay: Let’s have a look at the play.

Burak: Yes, Ok.

Hatice: I’m sure they like eachother.

Sultan: Are you sure?

Hatice: Yes, I’m so sure.

Sultan: Mmm Maybe. But, I don’t know.

(School bell rings)

Teacher: Ok friends, have a nice day. See you later.

(The lights go out - there is love music at the back round)

Sonay: (she starts reading the letter): My BelovedI love you! Just writing that puts a smile on my face, you put a smile on my face. I love you because of your sweetness, your kindness, your tenderness and your thoughtfulness. I love you because I have a longing to be close to you and you long to be close to me. I love you because,...

(While Sonay is reading the letter, Hatice listens to her. When Sonay finishes the letter, Hatice comes near Sonay )

Hatice: What have you got in your hand? (curiously)

Sonay: A love letter.

Hatice: Who wrote this letter? (Hatice holds the letter.)

Sonay: Burak; but I don’t know for whom he wrote this.

Hatice: Maybe it’s for me.

Sonay: Silly. Of course for me. (Sonay tries not to give it to Hatice)

Hatice: Put it away. This is for me.

(At that moment Burak comes into the class)

Burak: That’s my letter. What are you doing with it?

(girls are very surprised)

Sonay: Please explain, for whom did you write this letter? For me or for her? (as pointing out Hatice)

Burak: That is enough! This is NEITHER for you NOR for you. This letter belongs to my love. I mean I have a girl friend.

Everbody: WHAAAATT!!!
