Imatra is an industrial town in southeastern Finland near the Russian border. The population is about 30 000. Situated on the border we have quite a few (migrant) Russian students in our school.
Imatra has three main industries : paper mills, steel mills and a hydro power plant. The unemployment rate is high due to industrial decline in the area.
Imatra upper secondary school is a school under the same roof with the comprehensive school ( classes 7 – 9 ). The school has also international IB-classes and classes that specialize in the Russian language and culture. It is a school of many students, about 800 students when all of them are included. In the evening there are classes of the civic and workers’ institute for people who take an interest in hobbies; languages and so on. The upper secondary school has approximately 400 students.
There are 33 upper secondary school teachers, a school nurse, caretaker, school secretary, the kitchen staff and the cleaning ladies; the personnel of about 100 employees in the whole school complex. A lot of teachers work both in comprehensive and upper secondary school.
The school was originally built in the 60’s. It was completed 1968 to be a comprehensive school. In the late 90’s it was rebuilt and renovated and two upper secondary schools in Imatra were united and moved there. At that time there were some 100 students more than today.
There is also another upper secondary school in Imatra, located in Vuoksenniska, in the northern part of the town. There are altogether 4 upper comprehensive schools and 8 lower comprehensive schools in our town. Vocational school and the polytechnic school are located just opposite of Imatra upper secondary school.
